Math Skills Modules

This group of modules provide you practical knowledge and demonstrate the application of math in manufacturing. Each module in this competency group builds on the one before it, giving you confidence as you develop your knowledge in a way that is logical and intuitive.

Math I

Introduction to Basic Math

This module designed to teach you how to identify different branches of mathematics, use a calculator, and understand the importance of estimating an answer before calculating it (Estimated completion time: 0.7 hours).

Arithmetic Operations

This module covers the four basic operations in math – addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division – along with basic symbols and terminology (Estimated completion time: 1.4 hours).

Numbers and the Number Line

This module covers place values, the six different types of numbers, and how number lines will help you compare the values of numbers (Estimated completion time: 1.1 hours).

Introduction to Fractions

This module is designed to teach you about fractions, the parts that make up a fraction, how to compare them, and techniques for finding the least common denominator and ordering fractions (Estimated completion time: 1.1 hours).

Working with Fractions

This module will teach you how to convert improper fractions to mixed fractions, as well as simplify fractions and convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages. You will also learn to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and solve word problems (Estimated completion time: 1.4 hours).

Decimal Numbers

Upon completion of this module, you will be able to understand the power of tens; identify place values for decimal points; round decimal numbers; and add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals (Estimated completion time: 1 hour).

Positive and Negative Numbers

This module is designed to teach you how to perform arithmetic operations on numbers that have a positive or negative value (Estimated completion time: 0.9 hours).

Cartesian Coordinates

Often used in the manufacturing workplace, this module teaches you how to use Cartesian coordinate system to identify precise locations on a part. Upon completion, you will be able to identify axes, define plot points in two- and three-dimensional Cartesian systems, and plot points in different quadrants (Estimated completion time: 0.9 hours).

The Metric System

This module is designed to teach you how to identify metric units for length, weight, and volume, as well as convert between metric units, inches to millimeters, and millimeters to inches (Estimated completion time: 1.1 hours).

Geometry I

Introduction to Geometry

Upon completion of this module, you will be able to use a calculator and look up terms in the glossary (Estimated completion time: 0.7 hours).

Basic Building Blocks of Geometry

This module introduces you to points, lines, and other geometric shapes (Estimated completion time: 0.8 hours).

Angles

This module is an introduction to angles, how they are measured, categorized, and identified in pairs (Estimated completion time: 0.9 hours).

Lines

This module explains the properties of lines. Upon completion, you will be able to define intersecting, parallel, perpendicular, and oblique lines, as well as describe a transversal (Estimated completion time: 0.9 hours).

Polygons

This module explores the properties of polygons. Upon completion, you will be able to perform calculations on the interior and exterior angles of a polygon and define regular and irregular polygons (Estimated completion time: 1.1 hours).

Triangles

This module covers the properties of triangles. Upon completion of this module, you will be able to calculate the areas of a triangle, the lengths of the sides of a right triangle using the Pythagorean theorem, and length of a side or the measure of an angle using trigonometric functions (Estimated completion time: 1.3 hours).

Quadrilaterals

Upon completion of this module, you will be able to list the properties and calculate the area of all types of quadrilaterals, including parallelograms, kites, and trapezoids (Estimated completion time: 0.9 hours).

Circles

This module is designed to teach you how to calculate the circumference of a circle, length of an arc, and area of a circle and sector (Estimated completion time: 0.9 hours).

Three-dimensional Shapes

This module is designed to teach you how to calculate the surface area and volume of a prism, cylinder, regular pyramid, right circular cone, and sphere (Estimated completion time: 1.1 hours).

Coordinate Geometry

This module is designed to teach you how to work with a two-dimensional coordinate system, calculate length and midpoint of a line segment and slope of a line, and understand the equation of a line and circle (Estimated completion time: 1.2 hours).

Transformation Geometry

This module is designed to teach you to understand transformations, including translations, reflections, glide reflections, rotations, and dilations (Estimated completion time: 0.9 hours).

Time

Upon completion of this module, you will be able to identify units of time; how to measure it, tell time on an analogue and digital clock, and explain how to add and subtract times (Estimated completion time: 1.2 hours).

Money

This module is designed to teach you how to manage and account for money (Estimated completion time: 1 hour).
