Hydraulics

Hydraulics Skills modules

This group of modules comprehensively covers how hydraulic systems use liquid to transmit power by creating the energy needed in the fluid to make an entire system operate. Each module in this competency group builds on the one before it, giving you confidence as you develop your knowledge in a way that is logical and intuitive.

Principles of Hydraulics

Introduction to Hydraulics

This module is designed to give you an understanding of fluid power, the differences between hydrostatic and hydrodynamic systems, and the differences between hydraulic and pneumatic systems (Estimated completion time: 1.1 hours).

Hydraulic Theory

This module is designed to provide an understanding of the theoretical concepts and fundamental laws applicable to hydraulics, concentrating on force, speed, acceleration, path, flow rate, and pressure, as well as the continuity equation, energy equation, and pressure losses due to friction (Estimated completion time: 1.3 hours).

Hydraulic Fluids

This module identifies the functions and different types of hydraulic fluids, and how to select the appropriate classification of oil based on characteristics and purpose (Estimated completion time: 0.9 hours).

Hydraulic Systems

This module examines the components of a hydraulic systems such as the tank, pump, filter, heat exchanger, accumulator, valve, and actuator (Estimated completion time: 1.4 hours).

Hydraulic Actuators

This module explains how actuators transform hydraulic energy into mechanical energy, as well as the different types of cylinders, applications of hydraulic motors, and the importance of hydraulic maintenance (Estimated completion time: 1.1 hours).

Classification of Hydraulic Valves

This module summarizes how valves regulate and control a hydraulic system’s fluid. This module is designed to give you an understanding of how valves are classified based on the power to be transmitted, their function, the control, and their design. Upon completion, you will be asked to describe the use and classification of a variety of valves, including hydraulic, pressure, directional, shut-off, flow, proportional, servo, cartridge, and logic valves (Estimated completion time: 2.2 hours).

Hydraulic Piping and Instrumentation

This module shows you how piping and tubing convey hydraulic energy throughout the circuit of a hydraulic system. Upon completion, you will be able to describe the features of flexible and rigid piping, the various types of connections and fittings, the functions of a pressure switch and pressure transducer, and the types of flow measuring instruments (Estimated completion time: 1 hour).

Hydroelectric Symbology and Circuits

This module is designed to give you an understanding of the symbols used in hydraulic systems, as well as the basics of hydraulic and electrohydraulic circuits and their applications (Estimated completion time: 1.5 hours).
